The Victoria Works

The Victoria Works was a large factory on Ongar Road built by Burgess and Key in about 1866. Burgess and Key were an agricultural manufacturing firm who innovated on designs that had seen exhibited in London. They originally built a small factory on Queen's Road in 1855, but by the 1860s had expanded dramatically and needed new space - so purchased and developed the land on Ongar Road.
This vast building stood opposite the turning into North Road. It was sold to Ltd, builders and civil engineers, in 1923. They owned the buildings until the company was sold to the David Charles Group in 1972, who slowly reduced their operations there and sold the buildings. It was pulled down after it closed in 1978, by the time it was demolished it was known as the Albert Works.
