Church House

Built circa 1500

Demolished circa 1893

Church House was built in the early 1500s and by 1546 belonged to Edward Lamb. He gifted it to the church of South Weald so that its rents could be used for the upkeep of the church in perpetuity. It stood on the junction between Crown Street and the High Street, making the entry to Crown Street very narrow.

It remained being used for charity, rented to a range of different owners for about 350 years until 1893. In January 1893 the charity gave notice that the house was going to be sold for £580. It was purchased by the Brentwood Sanitary Commissioners and demolished to widen the junction of Crown Street.
