51 High Street (The Electric Picture Palace/Palace Cinema)

Demolished 1967

51 High Street was probably built in the 1700s, possibly as three cottages. By the end of the 19th century it was two properties and one of those was a draper's shop.

In 1914 it was heavily remodelled internally to create Brentwood's first cinema - The Electric Picture Palace. This was later shorted to The Palace Cinema. In 1934 the front of the building was demolished and the roof raised to create a larger cinema.

It was re-fronted and the screen itself improved in 1934 by architect Frederick Edward Jones - being renamed the Palace Cinema. It was originally operated by S. Dorin & Partners and then subsequently by S. Sedgwick & Partner. It closed in 1967 when the site was redeveloped by Sainsbury's.
