The Brave Nelson
The Brave Nelson was originally built as The Nelson's Head, although it is also sometimes recorded as The Nelson. It was named after the famous Admiral Nelson, who had died in 1805. A popular name for pubs in the 19th century, and certainly this name helped it attract customers from Warley barracks. Remarkably, its first recorded landlord owned the pub for about 50 years.
Known Landlords of The Brave Nelson
William Dunning Ives - c1860-1910 George Clifford Osborn - occurs 1911 Frederick Charles Pratt - occurs 1937 A Brown - c1988-90
The building has clearly been heavily altered over the years. In the 1960s and 70s there were regular gigs for emerging bands at the pub, including groups such as The Who.
