The Great Eastern Hotel
Built circa 1860
•Demolished circa 1920
Built near to the station, the Great Eastern Hotel was opposite The Essex Arms - on the other side of Warley Hill. It was built in the 1860s and by the late 19th century had become a temperance hotel. It was at this hotel in the early 1900s that Albert Frank Webber worked, who would be one of the many boys from Brentwood who would not return from the first world war.
Known Landlords of The Great Eastern Hotel
Charles White - occurs 1870/71 John Mulvany - c1878-c1895
The hotel was apparently not a commercial success and was demolished in about 1920.
The last documented person running the hotel, John Mulvany, was also landlord of the much more successful Essex Arms on the other side of the road. He was running both at the same time and lived at The Essex Arms, so it could be that the failing of the Great Eastern Hotel gave his business at The Essex Arms a useuful boost.
