Brentwood High Street Nursery

Built circa 1850

A large area on the south east side of the high street, now occupied by St Thomas' Road and the surrounding buildings, was originally a large garden nursery.

Since the start of the 19th century, it had become more and more popular to be a "gentleman gardener", and with the growth of large houses surrounding Brentwood the demand for impressive plants and trees had grown enormously.

Seemingly for that reason, this large plant nursery was built in the fields on the south east side of Brentwood and was slowly encroached upon by building - starting initially with the new church in 1835 - until it was completely built over by the mid 20th century.
