63-65 High Street
Built circa 1400
This building was built in the 1400s and is one of the oldest buildings surviving on Brentwood high street. It has been modified several times, and was partly demolished in the 20th century.
As early as thr 1860s, the part that is number 65 was being used as a butchers, which carried on the the next hundred years. In the early 20th century the part that is number 63 was a tobacconists run by one Doone, who later purchased a number of steam traction engines and lorries and became a house mover based at the same address.
In the 1970s it was planned to be demolished. The age of the building at the time was not apparent, and as builders began demolishing the house it became clear how old it was. The building was then underpinned and the structure protected and covered up to preserve it. The building has since been used as a number of different shops and cafes.
