The exact location of Smiths Yard is not clear, but seems to have been on New Road roughly where the Baytree Center stands now.

The old station building as originally built in 1840. This building stood on the opposite side of the tracks to the current station, opposite the Essex Arms.

From left to right the buildings we see are; The Chequers Inn, the Church, Pepperell House, a small house with a dormer that would be demolished to widen New Road, the Crown, and then a long building with four gables, possibly divided into separate shops. On the right you can see the corner of the old Lion and Lamb.

This view of St Thomas shows how close rural fields came to the town at the turn of the 20th century. It was drawn by Robert Graham Dryden Alexander (1875-1945), a merchant and amateur artist who spent most of his life living near Brentwood.
